Ms. Singleton with film students at the Environmental Film Festival.
Middle School G/T Resource Teachers serve as gifted education specialists in each middle school, collaborating with colleagues to differentiate curriculum for advanced-level learners. Specialists in gifted education are aware of and respond to the unique qualities and characteristics of students they instruct. They extend the essential curriculum and provide specialized services for participating students that are not available in the general education classroom.
The roles of the G/T Resource Teachers are (1) to provide direct instruction for groups of students or individuals, (2) to act as a consultant in differentiated instruction and best practices in gifted education for general education teachers and administrators, and (3) to be a liaison to families and the community regarding programs and services for advanced-level learners.
Middle School G/T Resource Teachers will:
Implement all components of the Howard County Middle School G/T Education Program including the following core
instructional components:
- Schedule one or two sections of the G/T Research Class and implement the essential curriculum, providing instruction
on research methodologies to sixth-grade G/T student participants.
- Instruct students using approved curriculum and resources in G/T curriculum extensions, such as the G/T Writers Guild and History Day.
- Lead multiple G/T Instructional Seminars to instruct students in advanced-level skills involving critical and creative
thinking, research, data analysis, oral and written communication, and creative production. Middle School Book Club,
Television Production, and the Debate Seminar are core G/T Instructional Seminars implemented by the G/T Resource
Teachers in all schools.
- Facilitate G/T Research Investigations and Creative Productions by instructing students in how to acquire the
advanced-level content knowledge and professional methodologies in chosen fields of study. Instruct learners in
metacognitive strategies, leading to greater independence as learners.
- Communicate student progress to parents of students who participate in G/T Education Program offerings
provided by G/T Resource Teachers.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to assist in differentiating their curriculum for advanced-level learners.
